Obituary for James David Franks Sr.

James David  Franks Sr.
Franks, James David Sr., - age 85 of Maynardville, passed away peacefully in his sleep Wednesday, April 2, 2014. He was a faithful member of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church. David was the former owner of Franks or Harlow’s Donut Shop in Oak Ridge from 1969 through 1985. He served in the military as a Marine during World War II and also with the Tennessee National Guard during the Vietnam War. He had many different businesses in his life and had the opportunity to call many celebrities his friends. He wrote and produced “Dusty Roads and Model A’s”. He loved to play the base guitar with all his country music friends, he hosted the Red Speaks Country Music Show and was the writer of the Foods of The Southland Cookbook. He was just given the honor by the Mayor of Union County, of “David Franks Day” because of his work with the Union County Historical Society with a large article in both our local papers. He built the steeple of Hansard Chapel United Methodist Church because he believed every church should have one. Dave never met a stranger and enjoyed telling of his many adventures throughout life. Most of all he loved his family and was the glue that stuck the family together. He is preceded in death by his parents, Martha and A. L. Franks; Martha Wayne & Pat Reed, Joy Collier, Ross Franks, Doris Franks and Linda Franks. He is survived by his beloved wife and best friend, Betty Keen Franks; daughter, Linda “Carol” (Kenneth) Seeley; son, James Jr. (Kathy) Franks; grandchildren, Jeremy (Kristy) Giles, Dustin (Barbie) Watts, Nick (Crystal) Wilson, Carmen and Randy Cate; great grandchildren, Cody Cate, Cory (Megan) Cate, Jordan Watts, Abby Watts, Eva Weekley, Rylan and Ella Wilson and Charlotte Watts; great great grandchildren, Alexis and Bentley Cate; nieces and nephews, Steve (Karen) Wyrick, Tom, Mitch, Patty, Vince, Clay, Ross, Laura and Kevin. The family will receive friends Saturday, April 5, 2014 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. in the Trinity Funeral Home Chapel. The funeral service will follow at 4:00 p.m. with the Reverend M. C. Taylor officiating. Interment will be in Bethany Church Cemetery. The family request in lieu of flowers to make contributions to the Union County Historical Society or Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church.
