Obituary for Barry Darryl Evans

Barry D. Evans (“Poppy”) 69 years old of Knoxville, passed away at his home on April 26, 2022, after a hard fought battle against a rare brain disease. Barry was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, son and friend. He had been an active member of Cokesbury United Methodist Church for 33 years. Barry graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1977 with a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering. He was employed at Tennessee Valley Authority for 10 years before starting his own business which he owned for 32 years. When he was growing up, he wanted to be an astronaut and loved astronomy and even built his own telescope. He enjoyed sharing his love of astronomy with his sons and grandsons. He was an avid UT fan and would never miss watching a game. His constant optimism always led him to believe UT was going to win every game. Running was a passion for him. He ran many 10K races, 13 half marathons and ran the first Knoxville marathon. He also enjoyed playing golf with his friends.

Barry is survived by his loving wife, Kathy; sons, Reid Evans (Jennifer), Byron Evans, Alex Evans (Scott), stepson Chris Sharp (Tiffany), and stepdaughter Nikki Sharp. Also survived by six grandchildren: Miles, Clara, and Lori Evans; Hannah, Weston, and Hayes Sharp. He is also survived by his parents, Jack and Nadine Evans and brother, Lyonel Evans (Glenny). He is preceded in death by infant grandson Jordan Christian Morris. The family is very thankful for all the prayers and support from family, devoted friends and Wesley Outreach Sunday School Class.

The family will receive friends on Friday, April 29th from 1:00 – 2:00 at Cokesbury United Methodist Church, South Campus with the funeral service immediately following. The graveside service will be at Lakeview Cemetery in Lenoir City following the funeral service.
